FAQ’s

Who needs a CONFORM®Med. Air Cushion?
This medical seat cushion is suitable for people whose mobility is severely restricted or who are permanently seated (e.g. paraplegia, stroke, amputation, ALS [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis], MS [multiple sclerosis], spina bifida). The CONFORM® Med. air cushion is used to prevent pressure ulcers (decubitus prophylaxis) in the buttocks area and can be used for therapeutic support (up to grade IV) in cases of existing pressure ulcers.
How can you decide which cushion height is suitable?
The choice of the required cushion height depends on several factors such as body shape, skin condition, constitution, weight and clothing. The decision should be made by specialist staff.
As a guideline, we can provide the following information on the three seat heights.
In general, it can be said that the 5 cm high seat cushion is mainly used to improve seating comfort or for prophylaxis. If pressure ulcers are already present, a 7.5 or 10 cm high cushion should be used. Cushions with a height of 7.5 cm offer a high standard of seating comfort and also have a considerable therapeutic effect (pressure ulcer grade I-IV) due to their good pressure relief.

The cushion with a seat height of 10 cm provides the best pressure relief. This cushion can be selected for pressure ulcers of grades I-IV. When adjusting the cushion, it is also necessary to decide whether the sitting position can be optimised with a two-chamber or four-chamber cushion.

Is body weight a decisive factor when choosing the seat height?
It is often assumed that a person with a low body weight should sit on a low cushion. It is not possible to make a blanket statement, as it is often the case that lighter people require a high level of pressure relief due to protruding bones. The higher the cushion, the greater the pressure relief. This does not mean that the person sits higher; rather, the depth of sinking into the cushion is greater, and thus the relief is also greater.
What is the difference between 1-, 2-, 4-chamber cushions and C4 cushions with a central valve?

The 1-chamber cushion has one valve. The air circulates within the cushion across the entire seat surface. The 1-chamber cushion provides the highest pressure relief in a stable sitting position.

CONFORM 1-Kammer Kissen

A 2-chamber cushion has two valves and two separate chambers. If you want to achieve seating stability in addition to pressure relief, we recommend this cushion. Depending on your needs, it can be used lengthwise or crosswise.

CONFORM 2-Kammer Kissen Material

The 4-chamber cushion has a valve at each corner. With 4 separate chambers, the sitting position can be adjusted even more precisely for the respective seating area. Careful handling is required when using this cushion.

CONFORM 4-Kammer Kissen Anwendung

Depending on the setting of the front valve, the C4 cushion can be used as a 1- or 4-chamber cushion. However, care should be taken to ensure that the valve does not protrude too far and press or rub against the back of the knees. If possible, the cushion can also be used with the central valve facing backwards.

How should the cushion be cleaned?
The cushion can be wiped down with a conventional surface disinfectant. If the valve is closed tightly, the cushion (except for C4 cushions) can even be cleaned in the washing machine. Details can be found in the instructions for use.
How long is the service life of the cushion?
The Medical Devices Directive stipulates that the manufacturer of a medical device must specify a period of time that describes what is known as safe use. We therefore comply with a legal requirement and, for formal reasons, specify a period of three years from the date of purchase. The specified period has no relation to the actual possible use or maximum service life for the user.
Can the cushion be repaired?
Yes! This can be done with a repair kit that is included with the cushion (due to international transport regulations, we are only allowed to include the kit with deliveries within Germany). Since this is the same repair kit that is used for tubes of bicycles, a set can easily purchased at e.g shop for bicycles.
Can the CONFORM® cushion catch fire from a lit cigarette?
The fire behaviour of elastomers can only be influenced by adding toxic additives. We believe that such additives should not be used in medical devices.
At this point, we would like to point out once again that the cushion must be used with a cover supplied by us. The cover is flame retardant.
We have had tests carried out in accordance with:
DIN EN 1021-1:2006 (smouldering cigarette as ignition source) and
DIN EN 1021-2:2006 (gas flame comparable to a match as ignition source)
and the requirements have been met.
Can an allergic reaction occur, especially in people with spina bifida?
In principle, you cannot develop a latex allergy when using our natural rubber pillows, even in direct contact.
However, if you have a latex allergy, you should use a cover for safety reasons. In any case, the cushion should always be used with a cover, as this keeps the cushion ‘in shape’, reduces shear forces and provides a comfortable seating experience.
All NR latex products from Wolff are physiologically harmless, do not cause allergies and comply with Category I of the Foodstuffs Act.
What material are CONFORM® Med. air cushions made of and what are the advantages of this?
The raw material used comes directly from a tree, the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). It produces latex – a material that is unique in nature: extremely stretchy, soft and yet surprisingly tear-resistant.
Unlike conventional plastics such as neoprene or PVC, which are made from petroleum, the raw material is renewable and completely biodegradable.
With our material, you are not only choosing safety and protection – you are consciously choosing sustainability and naturalness. A real win for people and nature.
